When the Mission Becomes a Song in Muskogee, OK

A Top-Notch Village™ is, by definition, a mission-aligned village.
When I work with agencies, one of the things we often discuss is how we can become more mission-aligned and operate under one shared mission to support healthy outcomes for children and families.
I suggest that a mission should be simple enough to be understood by children, families, and new team members, and it should answer the question:
Why do we exist?
Every decision should be made with that mission in mind.
But in order for that to happen, people have to understand the mission.
Before my keynote and workshop with Muskogee County Head Start/Early Head Start, I went to their website and looked at their mission statement:
“Muskogee County Head Start empowers families and prepares children for school and life.”
I loved it because it was simply stated and made it easy to understand who they are and what they do.
It spoke directly to people, their need, and how the agency supports.
So when I reached the mission section of my Top-Notch Village™ workshop, instead of using the sample mission I normally use, I used theirs.
When I recited their mission with them, they told me they had recently rewritten their mission statement because the previous version was wordier, and they wanted something that spoke directly to their children, families, and team members.
Then they proudly told me that everyone in their organization knows their mission by heart.
Because they made their mission statement into a song!!!!
And then they gave me the most delightful gift.
They sung it for me!!!!
BOOM!! BANG!!! POW!!! SHA-BANG!!!!💥🙌🏾❤️
I am so excited for the children, families, and team members of Muskogee County Head Start as they begin this new school year mission minded and mission aligned! ❤️🌰🌱🌳
