THE MATRIX IN ACTION

The Matrix in Action

The Village Engagement Matrix™ was designed to illustrate how children, families, and village members work together throughout a child’s developmental journey.

The Village Engagement Matrix™ is situated within the metaphor of an acorn growing into a Mighty Mighty Oak Tree™. An acorn begins small, vulnerable, and dependent upon the conditions surrounding it for safety, protection, and support. As it grows and develops, it moves through development with continued support from the village that gradually prepare it to become a strong and healthy tree.

Children develop in much the same way.

As children grow, the support they need changes. Parents and caregivers adapt to meet those changing needs, while village members serve in different roles throughout the journey to help children and families thrive. Over time, the acorn becomes a Mighty Mighty Oak Tree™ capable of providing strength, shelter, resources, and contribution to the very community that once nurtured its growth.

The graphics below provide a visual representation of the Village Engagement Matrix™ in action and illustrate how children, families, and village members work together throughout the developmental journey from Acorn to Mighty Mighty Oak Tree™.

Together, these visual tools demonstrate how an acorn becomes a Mighty Mighty Oak Tree™.

Child Developmental Outcomes

Every acorn carries the potential to become a Mighty Mighty Oak Tree™.

The Village Engagement Matrix™ illustrates the developmental journey that helps make that growth possible. As children move through each stage of development—from Acorn to Oak Tree—they develop new skills, capacities, responsibilities, and ways of engaging with the world around them.

The developmental outcomes below represent the growth we hope to see at each stage of childhood and young adulthood. They reflect the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and characteristics that help children gradually develop into confident, capable adults who contribute positively to their communities and improve our quality of life in the future.

Each stage builds upon the one before it. The trust developed during the Acorn stage becomes the foundation for exploration during the Sprout stage. Exploration supports identity development during the Seedling stage. Identity strengthens skill development during the Sapling stage. Skill development supports leadership and self-advocacy during the Young Tree stage. Ultimately, these experiences prepare the Oak Tree to step into adulthood with confidence, purpose, responsibility, and the ability to contribute their gifts, talents, and abilities to the world around them.

The graphics below illustrate the developmental outcomes associated with each stage of growth from Acorn to Mighty Mighty Oak Tree™.

Parenting Phases

The Parenting Phases illustrate how parents and caregivers evolve to meet the changing needs of their children across development.

In the Guardian Phase, the parent serves as protector, creating safety, trust, and connection. In the Explorer Phase, the parent begins discovering who the child is as an individual. During Architect Phase I, the parent helps build identity, confidence, belonging, and social-emotional strength. During Architect Phase II, the parent recognizes emerging gifts, interests, and talents and intentionally creates opportunities for those strengths to grow.

As children become more independent, the parent enters the Navigator Phase. Here, the parent helps the child chart a course toward future goals while gradually shifting responsibility to the young person. The child begins steering. The parent helps provide direction, perspective, and support.

Eventually, the parent enters the Consultant Phase.

Unlike the other phases, the Consultant Phase does not end. It reflects the long-term relationship between the parent and their adult child. A healthy Consultant Phase relationship is the outcome of a parent or caregiver being positively present and intentional throughout a child’s stages of development.

In this phase, the parent is no longer directing the journey. Instead, they become a trusted source of wisdom, guidance, and support when needed. The foundation established throughout the earlier phases creates the trust that allows a young adult to seek counsel, ask questions, and remain connected while confidently leading their own life.
