Episode 22: Teaching my child how to make good decisions.
Within the Village Engagement Matrix™, children in the Seedling Stage (Pre-K–2nd grade) are beginning to understand cause and effect, solve simple problems, and make age-appropriate choices.
During Architect Phase I, parents and caregivers intentionally scaffold experiences that help children develop sound judgment and increasing independence.
In Episode 22, we discuss why I chose to teach decision-making instead of compliance.
From a very early age, I knew I didn’t want my son to obey me simply because I was the adult. Compliance only works when the authority figure is present.
My goal was much bigger than that. I wanted him to develop the ability to think critically and make sound decisions, even when I wasn’t there.
So I created a simple decision-making framework.
Instead of immediately telling him, “No, don’t do that,” I would ask, “Are you making a good decision?”
If he answered yes, he had to explain why.
If he answered no, he had to explain why not and what a better decision would be.
Over time, he learned that I wasn’t the boss.
He wasn’t the boss.
Logic was the boss.
The best decision was the one supported by the strongest reasoning, regardless of who suggested it.
Today, as an Oak Tree, that framework continues to guide his independence.
When he’s navigating college life, he uses an AI transition companion built around the same decision-making process.
He talks through situations, considers different perspectives, runs simulations, and evaluates options before making important decisions.
The tool has changed.
The framework has remained the same.

It’s built by teaching them how to think, evaluate information, and make sound decisions long after we’re no longer standing beside them.
