Episode 8: From Autism Diagnosis to College Freshman
Nothing about him without him.
Within the Village Engagement Matrix™, children in the Seedling Stage (Pre-K–2nd grade) are developing confidence, perseverance, and a stronger sense of who they are, while parents and caregivers are in Architect Phase I, helping children build confidence, problem-solving skills, and a positive sense of self.
In Episode 8, we discuss a moment that helped me recognize that my son had his own perspective, preferences, and lens by which to experience the world.
As his parent, I spent years protecting him, supporting him, and helping him explore who he was.
However, during his ninth birthday party, I realized that my son was not simply experiencing the world through my interpretation of it. He had his own thoughts, opinions, preferences, and priorities.
That realization changed me.
It marked the beginning of a shift from speaking for him to intentionally creating opportunities for him to speak for himself.
Today, as an Oak Tree, that same developmental thread can be seen in the way he makes decisions, expresses his preferences, advocates for his needs, and participates in shaping his own life.
Through the lens of the Village Engagement Matrix™, this episode illustrates the importance of recognizing that every child has a unique perspective.
