My child always needs certain items.
In Episode 10, we discuss attachment to inanimate objects, a characteristic of autism, and how certain items provided comfort, connection, and consistency throughout my son’s development.
Within the Village Engagement Matrix™, children in the Seedling Stage (Pre-K–2nd grade) are developing confidence, emotional awareness, and a stronger sense of who they are, while parents and caregivers are in Architect Phase I, helping children build confidence, problem-solving skills, and emotional understanding.
For my son, attachment items were part of how he moved through the world. Over the years, the specific items changed, but the need for connection to meaningful objects remained.
Today, as an Oak Tree, that characteristic has matured with him.
He no longer carries those items with him in the same way, but even in college, he keeps a photo of them close.
Through the lens of the Village Engagement Matrix™, this episode illustrates how characteristics can grow and mature with the child.
