Episode 20: Building life skills through everyday activities.
Within the Village Engagement Matrix™, children in the Sapling Stage (3rd–7th grade) are developing increasing independence through meaningful experiences, while parents and caregivers are in Architect Phase II, intentionally designing opportunities that strengthen confidence, decision-making, and everyday life skills.
In Episode 20, we discuss how everyday activities can become opportunities to build transferable life skills.
As a child, my son loved riding his scooter. I encouraged that interest because it gave him a reason to move through his community with increasing independence. We visited the skate park regularly, and sometimes he would ride across the street to the pizza shop. What looked like a fun afternoon was also an opportunity to practice navigating familiar environments, making simple decisions, and completing everyday routines independently.
The scooter was never the goal.
The independence was.
Today, as an Oak Tree, those same skills continue to serve him. Instead of riding his scooter to the pizza shop, he independently uses rideshare services to travel from his residence hall to the bowling alley and skating rink—two places that have become part of his regular routine. This summer, he even began meeting a friend there, navigating those outings on his own.
The activity changed.
The life skills transferred.
Through the lens of the Village Engagement Matrix™, this episode illustrates that independence is built through repeated opportunities to practice everyday life. When we intentionally scaffold experiences during childhood, children develop skills they can transfer to new environments, greater responsibilities, and increasing independence throughout adulthood.
