Summer Camp Counselor, Fairfax County, VA

​

KinderJam is seeking Summer Camp Counselors. KinderJam has a commitment to providing young children with fun, exciting, and enriching camp experiences in a safe learning environment. This position will have the opportunity to gain a variety of experiences through working with KinderJam and the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA).

​

The camp calendar will run Monday through Friday, June 13-August 19.

​

Half-day camps are 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and full-day 8:30 to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.

 

Varied shifts available within each camp week.

 

Interviewing will begin May 5th. Additional training time will be required during early June; dates to be determined.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise assigned group of campers between the ages of 4-9;

  • Direct daily functions for summer camp dedicated to creating engaging recreational opportunities for children;

  • Instruct and actively participate in all camp activities with campers including daily swim time;

  • Ensure safety of camp attendees;

  • Respond to and document all accidents and emergencies;

  • Ensure safe transportation of campers within the facility, outdoors, and other on-campus areas;

  • Assist with drop-off and sign-in of campers;

  • Organize and lead both small and large group activities;

  • Identify and respond to campers’ behavioral issues, and report concerns to camp leadership;

  • Maintain a clean and organized environment in all camp activity and storage areas;

  • Assist in evaluation and assessment of the program;

  • Maintain respectable working relationships with all camp staff for the duration of employment;

  • Attend scheduled meeting and training sessions;

  • Represent KinderJam’s mission and vision;

  • Plan and assess camp activities

  • Communicate with parents/guardians of participants as needed;

  • Assist Camp leadership in program needs; and

  • Other duties as assigned by camp leadership or Camp Directors.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older;

  • Strong communication skills with children, parents, peers, and community;

  • Demonstrated experience in working with children and/or recreation activities;

  • Education classes or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field;

  • Excellent organization, time management, and planning skills;

  • Willingness to adapt and work in high-energy environment;

  • Requires walking or standing frequently; occasional sitting for long periods of time; occasional lifting of objects up to 20 lbs; and frequent lifting or carrying of objects up to 10 lbs;

  • All persons selected for employment must pass a background investigation and potential medical screening ;and CPR Certification (KinderJam will assist in obtaining CPR certification)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in working with children and/or recreation activities.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Internship

Salary: $14.00 to $18.00 /hour
